BUDAPEST — Hungarian flag-carrier Malev ceased operating early on Friday morning after 66 years of almost continuous service, after its planes were held overseas for unpaid debts. Hungary’s national airline had been placed under extraordinary protection from creditors and a receiver was appointed by the government earlier this week. Malev said its suppliers had lost confidence and started to demand advance payment for their services, while the government could no longer provide cash injections for the company following a European Union ruling last month. "This has accelerated the outflow of cash to such an extent, that by today the situation of the airline has become unsustainable," Malev...

The EU's top economics official told Hungary to take concrete steps to ensure central bank independence.

|||

The EU's top economics official told Hungary on Friday to take concrete steps to ensure central bank independence as a condition for talks to start on precautionary aid for its public finances, a European Commission spokesman said.

EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn had a meeting on Friday with Tamas Fellegi, Hungary's minister in charge for aid negotiations with the European Union and International Monetary Fund.

The Commission is stepping up pressure on Budapest over disputed laws passed in January, including one that the Commission says compromises the independence of Hungary's central bank.

“He (Rehn) reiterated that before we can start formal negotiations on this EU-IMF financing programme, certain preconditions must be met,” Rehn's spokesman Amadeu Altafaj told a regular briefing.

“In particular, he stressed that Hungary must take concrete steps to ensure full independence of its central bank.” - Reuters

Strasbourg, France - Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban expressed readiness to respond to international concern about his domestic reforms on Wednesday, but warned that the EU was taking 'a dangerous road' by encroaching on domestic affairs. Orban spoke in a special European Parliament debate in Strasbourg, where he insisted that he was working for 'the renewal of Hungary' which had been 'on the brink of collapse' before his government came into office in 2010. A day earlier the EU's executive, the European Commission, launched legal proceedings over three constitutional reforms, as his country was still struggling to engage Brussels and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on talks to...

STRASBOURG, France (AP) — Hungary plans to change legislation that has prompted EU threats of court action and sparked Western fears about democratic rights, a top European official said Wednesday, but the promise did nothing to appease critics.

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said he received a letter from Prime Minister Viktor Orban early Wednesday in which the Hungarian leader indicated "his intention to modify the relevant legislation and to work with the Commission.
